Biography

Calandrian Simpson Kemp

Organizing Committee Member

Following the tragedy of the shooting death of my son George Kemp Jr.(age 20) in Richmond, TX in 2013, I have become a vital community force in the fight against gun violence in Houston, Texas, and in America. As a survivor of gun violence, I have made it my mission to bring attention to the trauma of families affected by gun violence and acts of violence and is a liaison to help families navigate the judicial process. I have supported countless survivors who wish to use their voices to advocate for change.

Throughout, I have tirelessly reminded my audiences of the names of victims of gun violence, and acts of violence, and of their lives which matter.

Through countless interviews, conferences, meetings, and rallies, my message of addressing gun violence at both the legislative and social level has reached lawmakers, neighbors, volunteers, parents, educators, and children. My message is clear,"Safety First".

I founded the online Village of Mothers and Fathers Support Group and The No Weapon #1Life Empowerment Foundation, whose focus is to end gun violence through training and education. I have volunteered with a National Gun Violence Prevention organization and am a founding member of local grassroots organizations to educate young people including the No More Bloodshed Peace Walk Movement and One Houston One Hood School Empowerment Initiative.

In 2020, I made history by having my story featured and aired during the LIV NFL Super Bowl. The advertisement highlighted my son, George and his passion for football, my advocacy for changing gun laws and bringing awareness to my fight to end Community Gun Violence.
